SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test

Many schools in Europe, America and Canada require scores from the SAT test as part of the admissions process. It is a vital requirement for your college application. It is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities for admission purposes. The SAT is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test created and administered by the College Board. These tests are usually hours’ long, content-based tests that help you to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where you have an advantage. These tests are the only international admission tests that measure the ability and interests as prospective undergraduates. SAT Subject Tests helps you to differentiate yourself in the University admission process as well as position you to the school on how ready you are to embark on specific majors or programs in the University. In conjunction with your other admission credentials (your high school record, SAT exam scores, teacher recommendations, etc.), they provide a more comprehensive academic background and interests which could help you secure scholarships. The SAT exam is a recognized university admission test in the U.S for decades. The test is a preparation ground to showcase what you know and how well you can apply that knowledge. SAT exam, tests your knowledge of reading, writing and mathematics — usual subjects that you’ve learnt in high school. Most students take this exam during their senior year of high school, and a large number of universities use the SAT test scores to make informed admission decisions. As a prospective undergraduate student, the first step to take requires you to write the SAT exam which will gear you into finding the right university. This does not take away the importance of high school grades. The SAT exam is one of the crucial factors that universities consider when making admission decisions. In fact, the combination of high school grades and SAT exam scores is the best predictor of your academic success in university.

The SAT tests the skills students learn in school: reading, writing and mathematics. Your knowledge and skills in these subjects are very necessary for attaining success in the university and throughout your life. Therefore, the general SAT test/exam does not test logic or abstract reasoning.

The critical reading section includes reading passages and sentence completions.

The writing section includes multiple-choice questions on identifying errors and improving grammar usage and a short essay (optional).

The mathematics section includes questions on elementary arithmetic operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability.

Some universities also use Subject Tests to place students into various courses that are appropriate as a result of student’s performance on the test. Based on your performance on the test(s), you could potentially fulfil basic requirements or receive credit for introductory-level courses.

High scores in SAT test/exam may result in scholarship opportunities abroad.

How is the SAT scored?

Each section of the SAT is scored on a 200 to 800 point scale. The total SAT score is the sum of the section scores. The highest possible SAT score is 1600. If you take the Essay, you will receive a separate score. SAT 1 and SAT II are arranged and administered in Nigeria about six (6) – seven (7) times a year. SAT test/exam registration in Nigeria is usually done about 8-10 weeks before the intended exam date. You will need an international passport as a means of identification on the day of the exam At least two months of good preparation is required for the SAT examination
